Mount Nelson Residence
Nominated in the Residential Window or Glass Project Over $80,000 category of the 2026 AGWA Design and Industry Awards, this Mt Nelson residence uses expansive glazing to make its remarkable outlook a defining part of everyday life. Working alongside SKOOKOM Building & Design, Titane Windows and Doors developed a solution that could accommodate large panes of glass while meeting the insulation, structural and bushfire requirements of a Tasmanian home.
The solution centred on steel-reinforced Kömmerling C70 uPVC frames with a 53 mm glazing pocket, allowing Titane to install double-glazed units up to 36 mm thick. This provided the strength needed for the large panes while maintaining the thermal performance required by the design. Anthracite grey frames complement the dark external cladding, while classic white frames keep the interior feeling light and fresh.
Full-height glazing extends to the apex of the cathedral ceilings, opening the living spaces to the view beyond. Large sliding doors create an effortless connection between the interior and outdoor areas, with a specially designed recessed track allowing the internal flooring to finish flush and minimise the threshold step.
The glazing also needed to satisfy a BAL 29 bushfire requirement while reducing UV transmission through the home’s extensive glass surfaces. Viridian LightBridge double glazing was used, incorporating Low-E glass and a 1.52 mm interlayer to help protect flooring and furniture from fading. The completed windows comply with Australian Standards, NCC requirements and the project’s energy-efficiency requirements.
Delivering the design required close collaboration and meticulous planning. Window dimensions were carefully coordinated with the standing seams of the external cladding, while the largest double-glazed units had to be lifted over the house by crane, placed onto scaffolding and carefully manoeuvred into position. The result is a highly considered window and door system that frames the home’s exceptional outlook without compromising comfort, energy efficiency, strength or design.
